JUNETEENTH

Freedom Day
img
On March 24, 2022, Governor Cox officially signed a law to make Juneteenth National Freedom Day a state holiday in Utah. Also known as June Nineteenth, the holiday commemorates the date in 1865 when slaves in Texas heard the news of the end of slavery in the United States.
President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. It wasn’t until June 19, 1865, when Union Army soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, that enslaved African-Americans learned they were free and that the Civil War had ended. The holiday has been celebrated by African-Americans since the late 1800s.
States across the country have been recognizing Juneteenth as a holiday or a day of observance since 1980. On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed a law to make Juneteenth a federal holiday. Utah has joined 10 other states in recognizing Juneteenth as a paid state holiday. It will be observed on the Monday closest to the date that June 19th falls on.
