STD Education & Prevention
STD stands for sexually transmitted disease.
- People can get STDs from oral, vaginal, or anal sex and also through genital touching and contact with sexual fluids.
- Common STDs include chlamydia, gonorrhea, genital warts, genital herpes, trichomoniasis, syphilis, hepatitis B & C and HIV.
- Some STDs can be cured; however, herpes, hepatitis B & C, and HIV typically have no cure.
- It is difficult to know if someone has an STD. Many people have no symptoms.

Signs and Symptoms of STDs
Many people with STDs have no symptoms; however, some do.
Women may have:
- An unusual discharge or odor from the vagina and/or rectum
- Abdominal/pelvic pain
- Bleeding from the vagina that is not a regular period
- Pain with sexual intercourse
Men may have:
- A drip or discharge from the opening of the penis and/or rectum
- Pain and/or swelling in the prostate or testicles
Women and Men may have:
- Sores, bumps, blisters, itching, swelling on or near the sex organs, rectum or mouth, and swollen glands
- Burning/pain or bleeding when urinating or having a bowel movement
- Frequent urination
- Pain, swelling, or redness in the throat
- Flu-like symptoms (i.e. fever, aches, and chills)

Untreated STDs can cause:
- Chronic pain, damage and/or scar tissue that may affect the sexual organs, pelvis, liver, joints, and heart
- Infertility/sterility
- Tubal pregnancy
- Sexual difficulties
- Other lifelong problems
- HIV, hepatitis B & C or syphilis may be fatal
You are at risk for an STD if you have:
- More than one sex partner
- Unprotected sex (no condom)
- Anal sex
- Sex with symptomatic partners
- Sexual contact with people you don’t know (anonymous sex partners)
- “Hookups” or “friends with benefits”
- Past history of an STD
- Sex while using drugs and/or alcohol
Preventing STDs
- The best way to prevent STDs is not to engage in sexual activity (abstinence).
- Second best prevention is postponing sex until...
- Married
- Older
- Know the person better
- Have a condom
- Both partners have been tested for STDs
About Condoms
- 80-95% effective for preventing STDs if used correctly (follow directions on package) and consistently (every single time you have vaginal, anal or oral sex)
- Condoms do not protect against STDs that are on this skin outside the area covered by the condom. (Herpes, HPV and Syphilis can be passed in this way during skin to skin contact.)
- Use latex or polyurethane condoms.
- Use only water based lubricants (KY Jelly)
- Don’t use oil based lubricants such as baby oil, massage oil, cooking oil, lotions, Vaseline, etc. They weaken condoms.
- Never use a condom more than once.
