Certification
The Davis County Environmental Health Laboratory is currently certified through the Bureau of Laboratory Improvement. BLI is a member of the National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Conference (NELAC). NELAC is a voluntary association of state and federal agencies with input from private sources. This organization is a standards adoption body that solicits, adopts and publishes consensus performance standards on which laboratory proficiency is based.

Analytical Testing
The laboratory does three different certified tests. These include heterotrophic plate count (bacterial standard plate count), colilert (coliform test for water contaminants), and fluoride (concentration of fluoride in drinking water). These tests are important in the analysis of drinking and swimming pool water as well as untreated surface waters.
Laboratory Methods
The laboratory periodically conducts internal audits. The audit must be pre-determined and done at least annually. The procedure verifies that operations are in compliance with the quality system (standard operating procedures that are part of laboratory protocol) and the NELAC Standard. The internal audit program addresses all parts of the quality system, including the environmental sampling activities. The quality manager plans and organizes audits as required by the schedule and requested by management.
Quality Assurance
The internal audit evaluates the effectiveness of the laboratory in meeting the requirements of its own quality system along with those for certification. The internal auditor evaluates the specifics of the program, such as the ability of the corrective action plans to correct laboratory procedural flaws. Documentation of the internal audit means: a written procedure that covers what will be reviewed, by whom and how often; a schedule stating when the various aspects of the quality system will be audited during the year; corrective action documentation; records of reviews and reports of findings; and reports to management.
