West Nile fever is a flu-like illness that can range from mild to moderately
severe. It is caused by West Nile virus, which is carried by
mosquitoes. The illness generally occurs 2-6 days following the bite of
an infected mosquito (but can occur as long as 2 weeks afterward).
Some people notice a rash. West Nile fever generally lasts from 2-7
days. Antibiotics will not work on West Nile fever.
West Nile neurologic disease:
West Nile virus occasionally causes a severe disease that affects the central
nervous system. The symptoms of neurologic disease can range from:
symptoms of meningitis (inflammation of the spinal cord): fever, severe
headache, and stiff neck to
symptoms of encephalitis (inflammation of the brain): fever, severe
headache, and possibly confusion, convulsions, or coma
symptoms of polio: paralysis
These symptoms can be caused by viruses other than West Nile, and can also be
symptoms of other serious diseases such as stroke.
Some people with neurologic disease will die. Others will have temporary,
long-term, or permanent nerve damage. Antibiotics will not work on West
Nile neurologic disease.
