Watercolor Bird Illustrations with Lyra Zoe Smith
Learn how to create monochromatic bird paintings using watercolor with local artist Lyra Zoe Smith. She will guide you through basic techniques using watercolor to capture the likeness of a bird focusing on value over color. You will also learn to simplify bird shapes with pencil before applying your paint and bringing the bird to life.
Have a bird you would like to paint? Bring your reference with you of your favorite bird to personalize your work.
Art supplies (paper, pencil, brush, watercolor palette) will be available to borrow for the class. Attendees are welcome to bring their own supplies.
About the Artist
My name is Lyra Zoe Smith and I am a Utah based artist who specializes in small and miniature works. I received a Bachelors of Fine Art with an Emphasis in Sculpture and Painting from the University of Utah in 2013. I am greatly influenced by illustrators throughout history such as Beatrix Potter and Alphonse Mucha. My nature works focusing on plants, animals, and insects are driven with a goal of bringing a smaller world to light.
Since childhood I have loved small items and miniatures, seeing the wonder and magic contained in a world too small for us to live in. I have created small works my whole life and I never tire of creating artwork that can fit in the palm of your hand. Maintaining fine details and character when creating something small is very important to me as I believe the integrity of a piece should not be compromised with size. I am highly interested in turning my love for small works, animals, natural themes, and the unexpected into a career as a storybook illustrator. My work is described most by others as "Whimsical" and I love that description.
I currently teach illustration, watercolor, and community outreach art classes through the Visual Art Institute in SLC, UT.
