STD/HIV Program

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), sometimes referred to as Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), affect men and women of all backgrounds and economic levels. Even though the United States has made progress in decreasing the number of cases through better testing and risk-reduction education, there is still an estimated 19 million new cases of STDs reported each year.

HIV/AIDS, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), Syphilis, Chancroid, and Lymphogranuloma Venerium are reportable by law in the state of Utah. Hospitals, laboratories, physicians, and clinics are mandated to report these diseases to the local health department. The STD/HIV program ensures that all reported infected individuals have an interview with a public health nurse to:

• Verify that appropriate treatment was prescribed and taken
• Identify and notify contacts/partners of the infected individual that may have been exposed and facilitate testing and treatment
• Provide risk-reduction counseling and education
