The Nature of Fragile Things
by Susan Meissner

Sophie Whelan, an immigrant from Ireland, is so eager to leave the New York tenements that she answers Martin Hocking's request for a mail order bride without meeting the man. She travels across the country to meet the handsome man with a young daughter who has not spoken since her mother died. But all is not what it seems, and there is a confrontation just as the historic San Francisco earthquake begins. The novel vividly describes the chaos and mass destruction of the earthquake while also showing the strength of three vulnerable women who choose not to be enemies.

Susan Meissner writes great historical fiction and this might be her best yet.
