How do I dispose of my expired or unused medications?

There are several ways to properly dispose of old or unwanted pharmaceutical or recreational drugs. You can dispose of them through permanent community collection sites, local pharmacy programs, household hazardous waste collection events, and city or county prescription drug “Take Back” events. Discarding medications in the household trash is not the preferred method of disposal, but it is legal. If you choose to discard medications in the household trash please refer to the details below. Is it okay to flush medications down the toilet or sink?

No. When medication and personal care products are flushed down the toilet or washed down the drain, they can end up in our drinking water and/or our recreational waters. The long term effects of these pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCP) are currently not fully understood. We do know however, that having pharmaceuticals in the water supply can affect the local environment, including aquatic life.

Is it ok to throw my old medications in the trash?

Medication that is carelessly thrown in the trash is an easy target for kids. It is also a target for other household members, pets, and even burglars. However, medication and prescription drugs may be discarded with household waste. If this method of disposal is chosen, it is recommended to place the pills or capsules in a material, like coffee grounds or soil, and then place the mixture in a plastic container with a tightly closed lid.

How should I dispose of used needles or other sharps from my home?

Isolate sharps in leak-proof, rigid, puncture-resistant containers such as a plastic soft drink bottle, a plastic milk bottle, or a sharps container commercially available. When the container is full, the lid should be tightly secured and taped on. The sharps container may then be placed in the regular household trash for curbside collection.
