Job Description

General Purpose
Cart Worker: Under general supervision of an Assistant Golf Professional, performs semi-skilled work pertaining to cart maintenance and rotation.

 

Starter: Under general supervision of the Assistant Golf Professional, performs routine work in assigning and scheduling course play, monitoring practice range activity, and maintaining pro shop operations.

Grounds Worker:  Under general supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent, performs semi skilled work in maintaining golf course facilities, equipment, and grounds.

Example of Duties

Cart Worker:  Cleans golf carts; moves golf carts from storage area and ensures readiness for use; returns carts and aligns carts in storage area after use.

Performs minor repairs on carts; changes tires, checks tire air pressure, checks water, battery charge and condition.  Documents and reports any cart maintenance as needed.

Maintains a clean and orderly storage and staging area for carts.  

Ensures availability of pull carts; moves and aligns pull carts for golfers’ use.

Collects range balls, loads ball machine, and retrieves and returns empty ball baskets.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Starter:  

May open and close the pro shop. Schedules tee times on the phone or directly with walk in customers.

Assigns and schedules course play; announces and starts golfers according to scheduled tee times. Controls and monitors flow of play on the golf course.

Receives and accounts for revenues for golf fees, cart rentals, selling of equipment, range balls, accessories, and clothing.  Assists in preserving order in and around pro shop; keeps pro shop area clean and orderly for customer use.

Monitors and troubleshoots problems with the range ball machine; reports problems and malfunctions promptly.

Communicates efficiently with Cart Workers to ensure golf carts are ready and available for use.

Responds to customer questions and complaints in a professional manner.

Operates a motor vehicle in a safe manner and in compliance with all Utah laws and regulations.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Grounds Worker:  Maintains and repairs water pumps, spray equipment, water equipment and other equipment used on the golf course.


Assists with installing fountains, culinary and irrigation water lines; threads, cuts, and connects pipes; assists with maintenance and repair on automatic hydraulic sprinkling systems.

Mows fairways; watches for damaged areas and repairs areas with sand and seed.

Mows rough areas as assigned; trims overgrown/obstructive branches and promptly removes all cuttings from the course.

Mows greens on a daily basis or as assigned; adheres to mowing procedures and instructions for the respective course (ie., mowing direction, frequency); watches for and repairs damaged areas on greens; identifies and hand waters dry spots. 

Mows tees and adheres to the mowing schedule and instructions for the respective course; re-position tee markers; brings sand and seed and repairs divots on the tees.  Checks and fills ball washers with soap and water; replaces soap, water, and tee towels as scheduled or as instructed.  Mows areas around green side bunkers.

Prepares sand bunkers daily; rakes bunkers as scheduled or assigned; removes weeds and other debris, and ensures edges are clean and sharp; repairs worn/damaged areas.

Changes pin placement on greens and practice greens as scheduled or assigned; digs new cup holes for pins and fills existing holes; follows proper rotation for flag colors; repairs damaged cups and damaged areas on greens; identifies and hand waters dry spots. 

Greases mower and other maintenance equipment on a weekly basis or as assigned; washes mower after each use or as directed.  Informs Equipment Mechanic or Golf Course Superintendent of problems with equipment, and promptly reports equipment issues that need attention. 

Performs small engine repair work; performs tune ups and preventive maintenance work on vehicles; cleans and performs minor repairs in restrooms.

Removes snow from parking lot; checks for and immediately removes garbage and debris from the course and the parking lot.

Assists with golf course projects as assigned.  Performs other related duties as assigned.

Operates a motor vehicle in a safe manner and in compliance with all Utah laws and regulations.

Education and Experience
This is an entry level position requiring no minimum amount of education or experience.
Special Qualifications

Must be at least sixteen (16) years old.  Must be available to work varied hours, weekends, and holidays.

Employees driving a personal or a County vehicle for job related travel must possess a valid driver license, maintain the minimum vehicle liability insurance as specified in the Utah Code, and must operate a motor vehicle in a safe manner; new employees with an out-of-state license must obtain a valid Utah Driver License within sixty (60) days of hire date (exceptions for military personnel and their dependents).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Cart Worker:  Some knowledge in general cleaning and washing.   Skill in driving a golf cart and range equipment.

Ability to:  drive a golf cart and range equipment properly and safely; use cleaning solvents; communicate effectively with the general public; follow written and oral instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other employees, golfers, and the general public.

Starter:  Some knowledge in computer use, cash handling, and customer service practices. 

This position may require the driving of a motor vehicle; skill in operating a motor vehicle in a safe manner; ability to insure motor vehicle is operating in a safe manner; knowledge of Utah motor vehicle rules and regulations.

Ability to:  handle customer questions and complaints in a professional manner; use computerized systems to keep accurate records of cash receipts, perform fee transactions and purchases, and record other activities; receive payments and count/return change and transact receipts; follow written and oral instructions; communicate effectively with others; establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other employees, golfers and the general public.

Grounds Worker: 

Some knowledge of:  the repair of small engines and equipment; irrigation systems; the golf course layout; course maintenance schedules; acceptable golf etiquette; basic rules of golf.

Skill in operating golf course tools and equipment including large gas-powered mowers, tractors, and other maintenance vehicles.
