Rebecca Voymas - Juvenile Court
Legal Defender
Rebecca represents parents in child welfare cases as well as juveniles in delinquency cases. Prior to becoming a public defender, Rebecca did family law and criminal defense in private practice. She began her career in law as a prosecutor and served in 3 different jurisdictions in Colorado as well as with the Ute Mountain Ute tribe in southwestern Colorado. She was admitted to practice in Colorado in 2008 and in Utah in 2015.
Rebecca’s route to the law was not linear. After graduating from the State University of New York at Geneseo with a degree in sociology, she started an MSW program and decided she wasn’t ready for graduate school so took off for Steamboat Springs, Colorado, where she waited tables, bartended, worked for a tech startup, and then for a non-profit. She was restless and colleagues suggested she go to law school. Because the logic games on the LSAT looked like fun, Rebecca attended the University of Colorado School of Law in Boulder with a goal of working in water or environmental law. An internship in the juvenile division of the Denver District Attorney’s office changed her mind about the type of law she wanted to practice.
Rebecca has had a couple of breaks from law practice, working both as a case manager at a rural mental health clinic and as a DCFS caseworker. She had to return to law practice because she couldn’t stand being in court and not being the one addressing the judge. Serving as a juvenile court defender has been the most challenging and rewarding roles she has held and now she can’t imagine doing anything else. She considers her work a blend of social work, law, and life coaching and has a very down to earth, caring, and frank style with clients.
Rebecca likes to prepare for court by listening to loud music like Tool, Pantera, Metallica, and the like. She is committed to fitness and runs regularly, does yoga, and weight trains at the gym. She handles the stress of being a juvenile court defender by meditating and journaling each morning before heading out for a run or gym workout.
