Disease Reporting Rule
Diseases are required to be reported according to the Communicable Disease Rule R386-702, under authority of State Statute Sections 26-1-30, 26-6-3, and 26-23-b. All reports required by rule are confidential and are not open to public inspection. Nothing in this rule precludes the discussion of case information with the attending physician or public health workers. A release of information is not required to provide public health workers with patient information. To access the full text of Utah Administrative Code, Communicable Disease Rule, click here.
Public Health Reporting & HIPAA
Utah law requires reporting certain diseases to the local public health agency and includes providing additional patient information if necessary to assist public health efforts to investigate or respond to disease reports. Patient authorization for these disclosures is waived under federal HIPAA provisions.
